If you sell online to consumers in Italy or the European Union, starting from June 19, 2026 your site needs to have a new thing: a Online withdrawal button. Not an email address, not a PDF form to print — a button, easy to find and use, with which the customer communicates withdrawal in a few clicks. Let's see what the rule says, who it concerns, and where it's best to start.
What does the regulation provide
The obligation arises from the European directive on consumer rights (Dir. 2011/83/EU), amended by Dir. (EU) 2023/2673, which introduced the so-called withdrawal function (Art. 11a). In Italy you can find it at’Article 54-bis of the Consumer Code. In essence: when a customer has the right to withdraw, the seller must provide them with a tool Online, simple, and immediate to do it. The date that matters is the June 19, 2026.
Who is involved
It refers to who sells goods or services at a distance to consumers (i.e., B2C) in cases where the right of withdrawal applies. If you run an e-commerce business with individual customers in the EU—whether it’s WooCommerce, a sales funnel, or any online store—you’re most likely covered. Our advice: don’t assume one way or the other, but check your products and terms and conditions.
What should the button actually do
- To be easy to find and use. The goal of the regulation is to remove friction: the customer should not have to search for an address or fill out complicated forms to exercise a right.
- Gather the minimum information. Who are you, what order, the will to withdraw. Nothing more, but in a traceable way.
- Confirm on durable support. The customer must receive a confirmation that will last over time (typically an email, often with a PDF): this serves as proof, for both the customer and you, that the withdrawal has been communicated and when.
The mistake to avoid: thinking the button is enough
The visible part — the button — is the simplest. The part that makes the difference comes later: if a dispute arises tomorrow («I never received confirmation,» «I requested it on time»), you must be able to prove What happened and on what date. This is why having a reliable and unalterable record of every withdrawal is important: it's your defense, not a technical detail.
Where to Start
Three concrete steps: 1) map which of your products or services allow for the right of withdrawal; 2) add the online withdrawal function at the right point of the order path and in the customer area; 3) Make sure that every request generates a confirmation on a durable medium and a retained record. On WooCommerce and FunnelKit, this can be handled with a dedicated plugin—we’ve developed a free one specifically for this purpose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does that also apply to services?
Yes, in cases where the right of withdrawal applies. The exclusions provided for by the Consumer Code (e.g., custom-made goods, digital content already consumed under certain conditions) remain valid.
Is a contact form enough?
The spirit of the rule is to make withdrawal simple and immediate: a generic, inconspicuous form may not be enough. A clear, dedicated function is better.
What are the risks if I don't comply?
Besides possible sanctions, the daily risk is practical: disputes that you cannot manage and unsatisfied clients because a right is difficult to exercise.
